Rules: the car had to be sold new in 1948.
I think I would personally take a 48 Cadillac for the sole reason that this was the first time an American car had tailfins and that warrants recognition.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:06 |

Probably in this color scheme too:
Mercury M-100
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:09 |

Realistically, the ‘48 Commodore. My favorite year, step-down classiness, power, comfort, and style. Stretching a bit further to “if I had all the moniez”, probably the open-air bathtub:

This. A Studebaker Commander.

Man, I think it looks better with a roof

Packard Custom Eight Victoria
Its massive and smooth I8 combined with its triple-spring rear axle gave it effortless cruising and better ride and handling than most big cars of the day.

Ruins the lines to me. Smooth every where but that convertible top has a harsh edge on the back. And with the top down it’s just not as smoooooth
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:19 |
|
Delahaye 135 obviously.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:24 |

I love trucks...and Ford.

LOOK AT THE RELEVANCE TO MY LUSTING EARLIER!
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:25 |
|
It breaks up the lines a bit, sure, but I find something very compelling about the look with the top down - sort of a cup shape or an interrupted sea wave look, and that sweeping, sexy look is unavailable to the hardtop.
If the top were a complete hideaway, so that the rear scarab scuttle came to a sharp edge like a 30s roadster, it would look even better, granted.

I know I told you to find a Mercury!
Looks even cooler than the Ford and you’ll probably never see another one.

Easy. ‘49 Buick Roadmaster Sedanette
Or if it must be an actual ‘48 model year, how about the ‘48 Cadillac sedanette?

FUCK YOU AND YOUR PEER PRESSURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jk.
I love you, don’t worry.

There’s only one thing, and that’s by being limited to ‘48, we can’t go Full Retard and add the word “Ultramatic” to the long stew of adjectives and automaticness to the long list of smoothitinesses.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:30 |
|
Only 17 years later, I’m sure there was somebody who had a “new” one, like <100 miles.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:33 |
|
Ferrari 166 Inter. Basically their 166 Sportscar tubeframe chassis and 2.0L V12 with a touring body.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:33 |
|
Alloy-bodied XK120? Why not?
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:34 |
|
Ultramatic would have been more luxurious. But also problematic. I prefer the manual transmission.

![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:35 |

Huh. I was thinking Starlight Coupes came out in ‘50 with the bullet nose. I stand corrected.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:37 |
|
On that note, In 1948, I would likely be buying something made in 1936 because who could afford a brand new car right after the war?

An Olds Ninety-Eight:

It’s a three way tie for me:
2cv
Beetle
or 4cv
An amazing total of 50 horsepower between the three.

I did a search and found maybe one this side of the Mississippi...for $30k.
Curse that rarity factor.

1948 Bentley Eight Lemans 5.6 short chassis roadster
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:47 |

1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88
Cuz I’m that guy, in make believe land, that has next years model this year.

Nice pick! Probably by favorite truck bodystyle
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:47 |

Hahahaha.
I didn’t say they’d be cheap. Just that you should do it.
(not my money HA)

Both are awesome choices. You can't go wrong with either

Please refer to the gif in the earlier post...

Probably the most beautiful post war Packards made. I absolutely love these
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:50 |
|
I always forget about Studebaker. Nice choice though
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:51 |
|
They’re also both straight eight. That and a too-flashy grill are the only beefs I have with the Hornet that replaced the Commodore - the six is cool and all, but slightly less swag.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:51 |
|
Thanks, I have a huge love for the Mercury Pick Ups - thanks Canada for making more Mercury than we got here.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:51 |

This displeases me. I excommunicate you from this comment section. Get out!
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:52 |

Do they call it the 166 because each cylinder is 166cc ? if so that is a very clever numbering system. and boy oh boy those are some tiny pistons for a car.
That has to be some sort of smallest displacement per cylinder in a automobile record.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:52 |
|
haha so am I!
And I already have 1 Mercury project.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:52 |

Absolutely outstanding choice. These are beautiful
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:52 |

Well done it is stunning. What kind of engine did these have?
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:53 |

Was this one of their first road car
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:54 |

I first discovered the Stude in L.A. Noire.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:54 |

Great pick. Was this the first OHV V8? Or was that the Olds 88
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:54 |

The ultimate Miata
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:55 |

Both are great choices. The sloping back of the Cadillac is one of the best in the business
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:56 |
|
Well 49s were probably sold in 48 I'll allow it
![]() 12/21/2015 at 12:56 |

How is it futuristic?

Mmm, for once the absolutely ridiculously low drag coefficient in the late 40s.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:06 |
|
More cylinders are always great things to have
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:07 |
|
Did they sell them in America? Or just Canada?
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:12 |
|
Just Canada. The F-100 wasn’t available there, only the Mercury in this time period I believe.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:20 |

The ‘48 Ferrari 166m barchetta
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:24 |

I checked and it was available in ‘48. I just always associate them with the iconic bullet-nose update design of 1950.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:26 |
|
Good to know, thanks. Imo the Commander has a bit of a 50s vibe.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:29 |
|
Yeah, Studebaker went “low” well before most other automakers. A lot of their cars were ahead of the times back then.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:29 |
|
I was always quite fond of them.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:38 |
|
In 1949, the 98 was the first to offer the OHV configuration, as far as I can tell.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:45 |

Ford F Series. Because it’s the best.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:50 |

My dream is to take a ‘48 Buick Sedantte, drop a 702 GMC in it, convert to EFI, back with a 6L80e, and bomb highways like it’s 1944 Berlin.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:51 |

3.2 or 3.6 straight six with 90 to 160 bhp depending on spec.
Attached (usually) to a four speed Cotal electromagnetic semi automatic box.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:52 |
|
I’ll take me one Buick Roadmaster.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 13:58 |
|
It would have to be a Tucker 48.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 14:14 |
|
There can be only one.
I’ve seen this actual car at the Blackhawk.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 14:20 |

Tucker Torpedo. The Tesla of it’s time.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 14:21 |

Yeah pretty much. They took their race car and put a coach built body on top of it.

1948 Willys Jeepster. Such an adorable...thing.

I'm an excellent driver. Can I take it for a spin?
![]() 12/21/2015 at 16:00 |

Hopefully Tesla won't go out of business though
![]() 12/21/2015 at 16:01 |

Nope.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 16:02 |

I do love these. Cute factor is undeniable
![]() 12/21/2015 at 16:27 |

Same reason I love the Nash Metropolitan and Nissan Figaro. Old Mini as well.
![]() 12/21/2015 at 18:05 |

Probably a Packard Custom Eight. Currently I cannot decided if it would be a coupe or a sedan but it would be dark green. I’m too silly looking for a convertible...

I say personal luxury coupe
